Social Security Speeds Up Disability Decisions for Veterans
At the end of 2016, under the Obama Administration, the Social Security Administration announced a new partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This partnership between Social Security and the VA enables expedited processing of veteran’s disability cases.
The Old Social Security Disability Medical Record System
When a veteran previously applied for Social Security Disability Benefits, they had to submit “paper” medical records – just like anyone else. And typically it would take months for the veterans’ health care providers to provide the records necessary for the claimant’s case. The medical records had to be located, them copied or printed, and then mailed to Social Security. The SSA then had to manually open the letters, sort and file the documents and then deliver them to the appropriate person for review.
The New Social Security Disability Medical Record System
However, at the end of 2016 the Social Security Administration put in place a new system called “Health IT”. This enables a limited number of healthcare providers to electronically transmit medical records to the SSA. With electronic records transmission, this entire process of Social Security Administration obtaining medical records now only take a few minutes – rather than weeks or months.
And because the SSA can obtain and review medical seconds in minutes rather than months, they can make a determination much quicker than before. This means disabled applicants may be able to get the help they need much faster.
At this point in time, only a limited number of healthcare providers (7000 nationwide) are authorized to participate in the electronic submission of medical records to the SSA. However The Department of Veterans Affairs is now authorized to do so.
What Social Security Health IT Means for Veterans
This new Health IT system allows Social Security to obtain the VA Veterans’ health information electronically within minutes. In fact, through this new initiative, a Veterans’ medical records can be retrieved almost “instantly” electronically – without the need for human intervention.
Our experienced Los Angeles area Social Security attorneys are hopeful that the new electronic system means shorter decision times for any VA treated veterans who are applying for Social Security benefits!
