Can I Get Social Security for Fibromyalgia? (Part 1) –
We understand that if you are suffering from Fibromyalgia, you are in very real pain, and likely overwhelmed by your inability to return to the workplace. On top of that you may be experiencing frustration or even depression brought on by your debilitating symptoms – and the lack of understanding you receive from medical professionals and employers.
Our experienced Social Security Disability Attorneys understand that your illness and your pain is very real. And we are here to help you get the Social Security benefits you deserve.
But, unfortunately, while many individuals with Fibromyalgia file for Social Security disability benefits, very few cases are actually approved to receive benefits. There are a number of reasons for these denials. In this two part article our experienced Social Security attorneys explain why it is so hard to collect Social Security for Fibromyalgia, and how you can improve your chances of being approved for benefits.
Reasons for Social Security Denial for Fibromyalgia
First, the Social Security Administration relies on a “Listing of Impairments Manual” (called the “Blue Book”) that lists illnesses that are considered for disability. And, unfortunately, Fibromyalgia is NOT listed in this manual. So you are “in for a fight” from day one with a fibromyalgia Social Security Claim.
Secondly, the symptoms and the causes of Fibromyalgia are not completely understood yet. And the illness can vary greatly from one person to the next. On top of that there is not a “blood test” or “x-ray” or other definitive “test” for Fibromyalgia. So proving that you (1.) have Fibromyalgia, and (2.) that it renders you unable to work can be an uphill battle – even though YOU know it is very real.
This does mean that you cannot get Social Security Disability for fibromyalgia. It just means that it will be much harder to convince the Social Security Administration (SSA) that you are disabled – because it is not “on their list” and there is no “test” for it.
This is where an experienced Social Security Disability Attorney can be of great help. We have handled hundreds of Social Security Disability Cases, so we know what the SSA is looking for – and how to prove it – so that you have the best chance of getting your benefits.
Proving Disability from Fibromyalgia for Social Security
As with any case for Social Security Disability, if you have fibromyalgia you must demonstrate to the SSA that:
- You have a medical condition that can be proved and documented
- The medical condition is expected to last for at least 12 months
- The medical condition prevents you from performing ANY work in the general economy (not just your previous job)
When processing your Social Security claim for Fibromyalgia, the SSA will base their decision on your medical records, opinions from doctors and specialists (yours and theirs), and statements from you, and interviews with your family members or employers, etc. They will assess things such as how long you can stand, sit, and walk, how much you can lift, and how well you can focus and remember instructions – to determine if they think you are able to work.
This process can be overwhelming for an individual suffering from Fibromyalgia. So, even more so than in other cases, hiring a Social Security attorney to file for (or appeal a denial of) benefits for fibromyalgia can really make all of the difference in getting an approval.

SSA Updates Online “my Social Security” Account Services
Keeping track of your Social Security benefits has always been a hassle – from waiting for the annual statements to come in the mail, to endless wait times on the phone or in long lines at a Social Security Office. However, the SSA now offers several online services through their updated “my Social Security” portal.
In this article our Long Beach Social Security lawyers explain how the online “my Social Security” works, and how you can sign-up.
Signing Up for “my Social Security“
To sign up for your free, personal “my Social Security” account, go to https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/. You will need to have the following information at hand: a valid e-mail address; your social security number; and a valid U.S. mailing address. You must also be at least 18 years of age. Click on “Create an Account,” and once you agree to the terms of service, just follow the prompts and you are all set.
What You Can Do at “my Social Security”
“my Social Security” is completely secure and is your one stop portal to managing your benefits. There are a lot of things you can do once you set up your “my Social Security” account. For instance, you can get an estimate of your future benefits based on your earnings; you can access your most recent statement; update or change your address; get a benefits verification letter; and you can review and check your earnings history or the estimated amount of Social Security and Medicare taxes you have paid. If you have lost or misplaced your Social Security card, you can order a replacement.
What You Can Do If You Receive Benefits or Have Medicare
If you already receive Social Security or Medicare benefits, in addition to the things listed above, you can also report your wages if you work and receive either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income benefits. You can also check your benefit and payment information or get an SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for tax season.
Online “my Social Security” Account Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Notices
One of the newest features of “my Social Security” is the online cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) notice. These will be available in December of 2018 for beneficiaries with a “my Social Security” account, except to those with foreign mailing addresses or those who pay higher Medicare premiums due to higher income. (The Social Security Administration hopes those individuals will be able to access COLA information on line in the next year or so.) For the year 2018, COLA notices will still be sent by mail; however, in the future you will be able to specify whether you wish to receive them by mail or online.
Avoiding Fraud with “my Social Security” Account
To be sure your “my Social Security” account is safe, never give your log-in information to anyone. Our attorneys stress that the Social Security Administration will never solicit your personal information by email or request advanced fees for services in the form of wire transfers or gift cards – their services are always free of charge. And of course, you should never reveal personal information to unverified sources, select links or open attachments in emails that you suspect may not be safe.
