Social Security & Latino Employees

Our Disability Attorneys Discuss Social Security
for Latino Workers in Los Angeles .

Social Security (including both SSI and SSDI) is an important issue for Latinos in the Los Angeles area – and all of California – for a variety of reasons unique to the Latino community.

Latinos Earn Less in the General Economy – Attorneys

Tragically, a U.S. Labor Department report released this month indicates that Latinos earn less than both whites and African Americans. In 2010 another study revealed that Hispanic workers earned an average of $535 per week, compared to the $765 average weekly earnings of whites and $611 average weekly earnings of blacks.

This means Latinos are able to save less for retirement – and therefore likely to be more dependent upon Social Security. Additionally, Latinos are less likely to work in places that provide private pension plans – again often making their Social Security benefits their sole or primary source of retirement income.

In fact, as a result, almost half of all Latino elders would live in poverty without Social Security benefits.

Latinos also statistically have longer lifespans than black or whites – which means they rely on Social Security for more of their retirement income and benefit over a longer period of time than most other population groups.

Latinos Have Higher Disability Rates – Attorneys

According to the Department of Labor, Latino population also has a higher rates of disability, and as a result are more likely to collect benefits from the Social Security Disability Insurance program. In 2000, for example, the disability rate for Hispanics was 16.7% – almost 5% higher than the general population disability rate of 11.9%.

Contributing to this is the unfortunate fact that Latino workers are more likely to work in dangerous or hazardous occupations – including manual labor, outdoor occupations and operating machinery.
